The Campaign for Digital Rights is campaigning on two fronts.
Firstly, having recognised the damage being done in the USA by the Digital
Millenium Copyright Act, the CfDR is seeking to inform the public of the
very real dangers from similar legislation which will arise out of the
European Union Copyright Directive which is due to be enacted in all EU
member stated very soon.
Under the EUCD research into digital security may become a criminal offence
as may copying excerpts from educational texts in the classroom. Similarly
it may soon be impossible to lawfully record your favorite TV programmes to
watch at a later time.
Secondly the CfDR is campaigning for all charges against Dmitry Sklyarov, a
Russian computer programmer who was arrested at the behest of Adobe Systems
Inc. by the FBI when visiting the USA for alleged breach of the DMCA. He is
facing up to 25 years in US federal prison and fines of up to $2,250,000.
All this for writing a computer program in Russia where the program is
entirely legal.
